I love podcasting! I started my show in late 2010 and it has been a blast.
Podcasts are a new medium with lots of potential to become mainstream and it isn't going away anytime soon.
Who wouldn't like to have their own show that can be listened to at any time, anywhere?
Anyone can podcast
Think about it:
- Anyone with a computer and internet connection can record a podcast episode
- There are no laws and there is no FCC regulations on what you can or cannot say
- There are tons of “How To” videos on YouTube teaching us how to upload and promote a podcast
Podcasting is an ultimate First Amendment Right – Freedom of Speech – and everyone is invited to the party!
I can't get enough of podcast listening either
I am currently subscribed to over 45 shows in my podcast app. Some release weekly, some release monthly, one releases daily (I'll let you try to figure out which one that is).
My iPod Nano replaced the CD player and car stereo years ago and I have probably consumed more than 5,000 hours of content – all for free!
One week I had to travel around Minnesota for work (the day-job). I figured 60 episodes from various podcasts would be enough. I was wrong! The last episode in my playlist ended while I was waiting to board the flight home.
Can you imagine having to listen to the radio, and all the commercial breaks, if I wasn't able to listen to podcasts?
One thing is for certain: I learned more by listening to podcasts that week than I ever could have listening to terrestrial radio or music CDs.
I also hate podcasting
To be completely transparent with you: I have a love/hate relationship with podcasting.
It takes a lot of time and effort to produce a quality podcast – and a little bit of money. My podcast, the MoneyPlan SOS podcast, didn't make any money in the first year because I didn't know what I was doing.
Every episode took at least 5-8 hours of prep, performance, and primping before they could be released. There are a couple releases I wish I hadn't put out there and I have plenty to look back on and say “Wow, I used to really stink at podcasting!”
Then there is the podcasting equivalent of “post-race blues”. You feel a rush of relief when it is over but soon you feel depressed because you need to start the process over again in order to be ready for the next race/release.
But man….what a rush!
Like your very own radio station
Podcasts can be consumed anytime, anywhere – and without the need to be tuned into a local radio tower.
Over time, listeners will get to know you. I've had many people reach out to me on social media because of my podcast.
And because I have a back-catalog of episodes, new people can binge on my podcast in a matter of days!
So podcasts are BETTER than radio.

Being a heavy consumer of podcasts myself, I know what makes a show great. I also know the hard work that goes into making each-and-every episode.
